A Closer Look at PEMF Therapy

When it comes to self-care and wellness, the possibilities are endless. Advancements in science and technology have opened up far more avenues for alternative pain management and physical therapy. PEMF therapy is one of the most popular of these innovations. This form of therapy is used for a variety of different things, making it a flexible option for many.

For those new to PEMF therapy, it can look a bit complex at first. However, once we take a closer look at what this form of therapy has to offer, you’ll want to book a PEMF therapy session for yourself!

What is PEMF Therapy?

PEMF is short for Pulsed Electromagnetic Field. While this sounds like a mouthful, it is a fascinating subject in the world of therapeutic wellness. PEMF works by using electromagnetic fields to impact muscles, cells, and neurons.

Float Coppell uses a PEMF mat during its sessions, allowing for more targeted impact where it is needed most. Individuals who come in for a PEMF therapy session can relax in a private room, getting the rest and recharge they need to help tackle whatever life throws their way.

How Does PEMF Therapy Work?

According to a 2007 paper published by a team of researchers in Ontario, PEMF falls within “the rapidly developing field of biomagnetics, a field that includes, among other modalities, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, and deep brain stimulation.”

This form of therapy works by using low-power, low-frequency electromagnetic waveforms designed to target certain cells in the brain. In the 2007 paper, researchers completed a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial exploring the use of PEMF therapy on musculoskeletal chronic pain. The results found that trail members who received PEMF therapy experienced “pain severity declined by the end of the first day and continued to decline throughout the seven days of treatment; over the entire week, pain levels were lower than in the sham group, with the intergroup difference increasing steadily as the week progressed”.

Other studies have explored the use of PEMF in the treatment of Diabetic Neuropathy. The results of a small trial were shared in a 2016 issue of Practical Pain Management, detailing the use of this innovative therapy in those with Diabetic Neuropathy. Results of the preliminary study found that the pain scores of trial members were significantly reduced.

PEMF therapy works best when incorporated with a healthy diet and stretching/exercise. It is important to remember that a healthy life is made up of multiple components. PEMF therapy can be a useful part of building that healthy lifestyle.

Who is PEMF Therapy For?

PEMF therapy is used by a wide range of individuals for many different reasons. Some of the reasons include:

  • Alternative chronic pain management
  • Physical therapy
  • Inflammation reduction
  • Sleep promotion
  • Stress relief

It is important to note that individuals with medical complications or on specific medication should consult with their physician before incorporating PEMF therapy into their wellness routine.
