What Is a Mantra?

A mantra can be referred to as a mined vehicle. This may sound weird at first when trying to connect the dots with meditation, but it actually comes from the Sanskrit word ‘’ mun’’ which means mined, and ‘’truck’’ which means vehicle. It’s a word or phrase you repeat during meditation as a tool to help release your mind, and can make the world of difference when aiming to achieve peace and tranquility.

This mantra mined vehicle is custom-designed to take you from the active layers of left-brain thinking, down into more subtle layers of right-brain being. In other words, a mantra is an instrument of the mind—a powerful sound or vibration that you can use to enter a deep state of meditation.

When you begin on your meditation journey, you’re able to use a mantra to become a self-sufficient meditator. The old paradigm we have about meditation is ‘’if I can stop my mind from thinking, only then will I experience bliss’’ but if you think about it clearly, it’s actually the other way around.

We use mantras to help us access our bliss and fulfillment inside of us, which is the only place that bliss resides. Every spiritual text has been saying this since the beginning of time: ‘’what you seek, is inside you’’. Now, that’s great to get as an intellectual concept, but is so much more powerful when you’re able to experience that viscerally and tangibly every single day.

That, all in all, is the mantra’s job – to act as a vehicle and anchor to help you de-excite your nervous system and access your bliss where it resides.

How to Get Started in Mantra Meditation

Our minds have so many thoughts, so many desires. Like a seed planted with the intention of blossoming into a beautiful perennial, a mantra can be thought of as a seed for energizing an intention. Much in the same way you plant a flower seed, you plant mantras in the fertile soil of practice. You nurture them, and over time, they bear the fruit of your intention.

Excited to experience a more stress-free life and take back control of your thoughts? Here’s how to get started in mantra meditation:

  • Get Into a Comfortable Position – First things first, find a quiet room, free of distractions.
  • Choose your Mantra – You can repeat this word out loud, or in your head. You’re able to choose a more classically significant spiritual word or you can choose a word or phrase that is important to you.
  • Close Your Eyes, and Repeat the Phrase – While doing this, try to focus only on the sound of your voice and feel of your mantra, nothing else. If other thoughts do begin to creep in, all you have to do is gently redirect your attention to your mantra.
  • Continue Until Peace Begins to Arrive – And that’s it. You’re able to start with either 5 or 10-minute sessions, and eventually work up to 20 or 30. To improve, make sure you do mantra meditation at least once a day.
